Family-friendly theme parks in England

Gulliver's World Theme Park in Warrington, England, is a popular amusement park specializing in families with children aged 2 to 13. Located in Cheshire, between the cities of Manchester and Liverpool, the park covers an area of approximately 32 hectares and is part of the Gulliver's chain, which operates other locations in Matlock Bath, Milton Keynes, and Rotherham. Since its opening in 1989, Gulliver's World has established itself as the group's second park and has continuously expanded to provide a comprehensive experience for young adventurers and their families. The park is loosely based on the world of Lilliput from Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels", with the theme being more subtle than dominant.

Indoor attractions for kids in theme parks

Gulliver's World is divided into several themed areas, each offering its own attractions and play opportunities. The most well-known include "Lilliput Land", "Gully Town", "Safari Kingdom", "The Lost World", "Smuggler's Wharf", and the newer "Gulliver's Gears". Each area is designed to appeal to children of different ages, from gentle rides for the little ones to more exciting attractions for older children. Highlights include the wooden roller coaster "The Antelope", considered one of the few rides built in-house by the park, as well as "Overdrive", a 360-degree pendulum ride, and "Grand Prix Racers", a family roller coaster in the motorsport-inspired "Gulliver's Gears" area. For younger visitors, there are rides like the "Wriggler" or the "Togo Tower" water slides, offering fun without too much thrill.

Family vacations at children’s theme parks

In addition to the rides, the park is known for its numerous play areas, found in almost every themed section. These include climbing frames, sand pits, ball pools, mazes, and an "Maze of Cards" in Alice in Wonderland style. These areas are particularly convenient for families with children of varying ages, providing a alternative for the little ones while older siblings enjoy the rides. The park places a strong emphasis on creating a balance between active attractions and relaxed play areas, setting it apart from larger, thrill-oriented parks like Alton Towers.

Themed areas for young adventurers

In addition to the main theme, Gulliver's World also offers indoor attractions to make the experience weather-proof. The "Splash Zone" is a small water park with slides and splash areas, catering especially to preschoolers, while the "Blast Arena" offers an interactive NERF shooting adventure for children aged six and up. These areas are ideal for rainy days or as a complement to the outdoor offerings. The park aims to keep families with young children in mind, which is reflected in the rule that only visitors with children are admitted - a measure that ensures a child-friendly atmosphere.

Attractions for preschoolers in theme parks

Another feature is the Gulliver's Hotel, which opened in 2012 and expands the concept of a family resort. The accommodations are specifically tailored to families, with themed suites like the "Swizzels Sweetie Suite" or the "NERF Zone Suite", often accommodating up to six people. Many rooms feature balconies and are designed in a woodland style that blends with the natural surroundings. The "Stay and Play" packages make the park a destination for short breaks, keeping the children entertained all day while parents can enjoy a relaxed environment.

The historical background of the site adds character to Gulliver's World. The park was built on the former site of RAF Burtonwood, a significant air base during World War II. The RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre, located on the site, tells the story of this base and is accessible to visitors. It showcases exhibits such as the cockpit of a C54 Skymaster aircraft and provides insight into the military history of the region - an interesting addition for history enthusiasts within the family.

Gulliver's World is also known for its seasonal events, which take place throughout the year. These include the "Easter Extravaganza" with Easter activities, the "Halloween Trick and Treat Trail" with spooky surprises, and Christmas events with lights and festive shows. These events add extra magic to the park and ensure that a visit feels different depending on the season. Mascots like Gully and Gilly Mouse regularly appear to entertain the children and enhance the family-friendly atmosphere.

The dining options are diverse and family-friendly, with several food stalls and restaurants like "Lilliput Fryer" for fish and chips or "Diamond Lil's" for hot dogs and pizzas. There is also ample space for picnics, giving the park an additional advantage for budget-conscious families. The infrastructure is well-thought-out, with baby changing facilities, free parking, and a largely accessible design that facilitates access.

It is good for a day trip with your children. We booked to stay for a night over but I think staying over is worth it with very young children because they’ve movie night and show for toddlers and young children.

The worst theme park I’ve been to. Went in half term and SO many things were closed. A total waste of money and time. Very disappointed. If you’re going to have so many closures, you should probably let people know when they’re booking.

Loved it. Food and drink prices were understandably expensive. And weren't available until 11.30am (opened at 10.30am) Queues not too long, and even with the dinosaurs looking a bit tired... they are old! Loos clean and easy to find. Safe feel

Place is a dump. Queues for rides take ages went on 3 rides in 4 hours. Food outlet should be -5 stars 1 lad chucking pizzas onto empty pizza wrappers before assembling pizza box. Pepperoni in a box uncovered not even in a container. The pond water for the boat rides stink probably stagnant. Felt like I was walking round Chernobyl. Place Needs massive investment.

I had a nice time and the workers kept talking to me I would recommend the runway train scary but fun and hot air balloons I would recommend it. MORE THEN CHESSINGTON!

Absolutely appalling place. Loads of rides are broken and the entire place is incredibly dated, run down and in need of major TLC. Everything was broken or damaged or in serious disrepair. I was embarrassed to be walking around somewhere so tatty that had seen no investment in many years. Food options were very poor and depressing - basically just chips, reconstituted chicken nuggets and the nastiest cheeseburgers you’ve ever seen.

Absolutely embarrassing that it calls itself a theme park. Should be closed down.

I gave 4 stars because there were parts of the park that were a bit run down and in need of maintenance and also the food was very expensive and awful. If not for this it would have been 5 stars because the kids loved it

We visited today on the first weekend of the season, having not visited since I was a child. I think it's fair to say that the theme park hasn't seen maintenance in a good few years with the main aesthetic being algae. There were quite a few broken things and quite a lot of hazards for children such as rotting benches, broken fence panels and damaged theme park characters (see photo). Quite a lot of the rides were not available which we were not notified of and despite the park opening at 10:30am, the staff were still opening rides at gone 12pm. My toddler seemed to have an ok time but with discounted tickets for adults and free entry for under 2s, this still seemed too much to pay. Don't waste your money and go somewhere else.
